  This video illustrates the power of music to bring people together, to initiate a sense of connection and friendship and to have fun. Everyone – participants and volunteers – all benefit. There are different examples of musical engagement and expression: tapping, word recall through the songs, playing and dancing.

• Strategies

  • Get out and about with your residents, taking them to public musical events where possible and appropriate. E.g. free mid-week church concerts

  • See whether there are concerts in your local area especially intended for older people with memory loss

  • Collaborate with other care providers to organise musical events with older people in mind

  • Keep a log of your residents’ experiences, noting their likes and dislikes for future reference
