Playing instruments together

  • Learning new things and creating long term memories is still very much possible for those with dementia. Playing instruments together can be a very powerful method of social bonding in older people.

This session was filmed at Eden Court, Battersea, London (Cinnamon Group).

    • Use residents’ musical skills to put together a group or band

    • Encourage musical family members and friends to join the group too

    • Encourage the group to perform for other residents and visitors

    • Consider the part that hand-held percussion instruments can play; a modest contribution can sound good as part of something bigger
